Greenhouse Gas (CO2) Reductions
due to the Montreal Aerial Gondola |
|
| |
|
Not only will the Montreal Aerial Gondola bolster the city’s economy, it will dramatically benefit the environment … reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions by over 8,000 metric tons per year… equivalent to the Greenhouse Gas produced from driving 1,000 mid sized vehicles around the world – every year. |
|
| |
|
Relative Points for Calculations
- Projected ridership for the Montreal Aerial Gondola is 3,000,000 round trip riders per year.
- Distance by vehicle from Quai Jacques Cartier (Old Port) to Ile Notre-Dame is 6.25 km one way or 12.5 km round trip.
- This equals 3,000,000 x 12.5 = 37,500,000 “people kilometers” per year.
- The current average occupancy per vehicle operating in the area is 1.2 (including the driver).
- Therefore the equivalent “vehicle kilometers” removed from the system would be:

- A mid sized vehicle consumes:
- 8.5 liters per 100 km highway driving
- 10.2 liters per 100 km city driving
- 11.9 liters per 100 km rush hour driving (including idling time)
- For the purpose of this study, we will assume half the driving done by our riders would have been city driving and the other half rush hour driving. We will use the average of the two consumption rates, 10.2 + 11.9 ÷ 2 = 11.1 liters per 100 km.
- Therefore the amount of gasoline saved is

- Each liter of gasoline consumed produces 2.3445 kg of CO2.
- Total CO2 reduction:

Summary
The Montreal Aerial Gondola reduces
Greenhouse Gases (CO2) by 8,132 metric tons per year.
Relative Reference
- A mid sized vehicle consumes 8.5 litres/100 kms of highway driving.
- Therefore 1 liter drives the vehicle

- Therefore 3,468,750 litres drives the vehicle 3,468,750 x 11.7647 = 40,808,803 kms.
- Therefore 1,000 mid size vehicles drive

- The earth’s circumference at the equator is 40,075 kms.
- Therefore 1,000 mid sized vehicles driving 40,809 kms each is the same as 1,000 mid sized vehicles each driving around the earth at the equator.
Reference Summary
8,132 metric tons of Greenhouse Gas (CO2) reductions per year is equivalent to the Greenhouse Gas produced from driving 1,000 mid sized vehicles around the world every year.
